オールディーズと言えば何と言ってもポール・アンカ！ ニール・セダカと共に、ポップスの草創期を代表するシンガーですね。
１９４１年７月３０日 カナダの首都オタワ ( Ottawa ) に生まれました。
レコード・デビューは１９５６年の 「 アイ・コンフェス ( I Confess ) 」。
１９５７年にＡＢＣパラマウント･レコード認められて契約、同年７月に自作自演の 「 ダイアナ 」 を発売。
これが全米１位に輝くミリオン・セラーを記録し、弱冠１６歳で世界的なスターとなりました。
尚、以後 「 ダイアナ 」 は世界１４９人ものアーティストによりカバーされた代表曲の一つとなりました。
その後も 「 君はわが運命 」 「 クレイジー・ラブ 」 「 ロンリー・ボーイ ( Lonely Boy ) 」
「 あなたの肩に頬うめて ( Put Your Head on My Shoulder ) 」 等々トップ１０ヒットを放ってスター街道を進んで行きます。
１９６１年９月ＲＣＡレコードへ移籍、 「 愛してほしいの ( Love Me Warm And Tender ) 」 「 ギターとワインで忘れたい ( A Steel Guitar And A Glass Of Wine ) 」
「 ボサ・ノヴァでキッス ( Eso Beso ( That Kiss！ ) 」 「 思い出のダイアナ ( Remember Diana ) 」 などのヒットを連発します。
６０年代後半からはソングライターとして作曲活動も始めます。
ポール･アンカが他のアーティストに提供した楽曲は８００曲以上にも及ぶといいます。
ビートルズが出現してから以降は一時ヒットに恵まれなくなってしまいますが、
１９６８年にフランク・シナトラに提供した 「 マイ・ウェイ ( My Way ) 」 がヒットして復活。
１９７１年にトム・ジョーンズの 「 シーズ・ア・レディ ( She's A Lady ) 」 も世界的に注目を浴びました。
シンガーとしても１９７１年に 「 愛のバラード ( Do I Love You ) 」 、
１９７４年にはオディア・コーツとデュエットした 「 ２人の絆 ( You're ) Having My Baby ) 」 が全米１位のヒットとなりました。
そのころ日本でも、ＣＭに使用された 「 スーパー・ナウ ( Everything Is Super Now ) 」 が大ヒットしています。
シンガーとしてはもちろんソングライター、プロデューサーと、マルチ・タレントとして今も大活躍中です。
ポール・アンカ＝６０'sアイドルという見方が現在でも一般的ですが、今なお米国ポップス界の巨人であることに変わりはありません。
