１９３９年３月１３日生まれ。 ニューヨーク州ブルックリン ( Brooklyn ) 出身。
学生時代同じアパートに住んでいた作詞家 ハワード・グリーンフィールド ( Howard Greenfield ) と組んで曲作りを始めました。
１９５６年には 「トーケンズ」 のメンバーとしてデビューし、１９６０年代に「 ライオンは寝ている 」がヒットします。
翌年ソロとして再出発し、シンガー・ソングライターの先駆けとして活躍を始めました。
１９５８年にコニー・フランシスに提供した 「 間抜けなキューピッド ( Stupid Cupid ) 」 が１４位のヒットとなり注目されます。
同年にＲＣＡレコードとソロ歌手として契約を結び 「 恋の日記 （ The Diary ） 」（１４位）
「 おゝ・キャロル 」（９位）、「 カレンダー・ガール 」（４位）、「 すてきな１６才 」 「 小さい悪魔 」（全米１１位）、
「 悲しき慕情 （ Breaking Up Is Hard To Do ） 」（１位）、「 可愛いあの娘 （ Next Door To An Angel ） 」（５位） などをチャート・インさせ、
ポール・アンカと並ぶ、誰もが忘れられない全米のオールディーズ・トップアイドルとなりました。
尚、" キャロル " とは当時ガール・フレンドだったシンガーソングライター " キャロル・キング ( Carole King ) " のことを歌ったもののようです。
ハリのある高音での哀愁のメロディの数々は、オールディーズの代名詞とも言われます。
シンガーとしてもソングライターとしても大活躍することとなりました。
この時期の彼は日本での人気もとても高く、日本だけのヒット曲としては 「 恋の片道切符 」 、「 悲しきクラウン 」 、
「 恋の一番列車 」 、日本語で歌ってヒットした 「 涙の小径 （ The World Through A Tear ） 」 などがあります。
ビートルズが登場した１９６４年以降はヒットに恵まれず、長い低迷期に入ってしまいます。
彼は上記５０年代末〜６０年代のオールディーズ時代と、７０年代シンガー・ソングライター時代という２つのピークを持ちます。
英米では “ ７０年代シンガー・ソングライター時代 ” の方が評価が高いようです。
７０年代に入り エルトン・ジョン が作った ロケット・レコード ( Rocket Records ) に移籍し、
１９７５年に 「 雨に微笑を ( Laughter in the rain ) 」 がナンバーワンとなり見事復活。
シンガー・ソングライターが全盛になると、彼もまたヒット・チャートに甦るのです。
エルトン・ジョンと組んだ 「 バッド・ブラッド ( Bad Blood ) 」（１位） 、 リメイクの 「 悲しき慕情 」（８位） 、
「 愛ある限り （ Love Will Keep Us Together ） 」（１位） と大ヒットを記録し復活を果たします。
コニー・フランシス、トム・ジョーンズ、フィフス・ディメンション、カーペンターズ等にも作品を提供し、
この頃が彼のキャリアのピークであったと言えるでしょう。
尚、日本で一番の大ヒットとなった 「 恋の片道切符 」 は、アメリカではＢ面の曲で全くの無名曲でした。
作曲は彼ではありませんが、哀愁に満ちたメロディがどうやら日本人の心を掴んだようです。
