[ エルヴィス・プレスリー ] Elvis Presley
今更ご紹介する迄もありません " King Of Rock'n Roll " です。
１９３５年１月８日ミシシッピ州トゥーペロ ( Tupelo ) 生まれ、１３歳の時に一家はテネシー州メンフィス ( Memphis ) に転居。
１１歳からギターを始め、地元のミュージシャン達と演奏を行ったりしていました。
高校卒業後は精密金型会社で働き、次にはクラウン・エレクトリック社のトラック運転手となりました。
１９５３年の夏にサン・スタジオで最初の録音をします。 収録曲は当時のポピュラーなバラード 「 My Happiness 」 と 「 That's When Your Heartaches Begin 」。
アメリカ南部のローカル・レーベル、サン・レコードの創業者サム・フィリップスは、 その録音を聞きエルヴィスの才能を感じ、エルヴィスを売り出すこととした。
１９５４年レコーディングした 「 That's All Right 」 が脚光を浴び、序々に新しい音楽である ” Rock'n'Roll ” の担い手として頭角を現わしてきます。
収録されたシングルは、放送した二日後にはメンフィスでローカル・ヒットとなりました。又彼の評判をテネシー中に広げることになります。
１９５５年１１月ＲＣＡレコードと契約。 １９５６年１月に第６弾シングル 「 Heartbreak Hotel 」 でメジャー・デビュー。
これが４月にチャート全米１位となり、以降 「 Hound Dog 」 「 Don't Be Cruel 」 「 Jailhouse Rock 」 など、 ” Rock'n'Roll ” の歴史に残る数々のヒットを放っていきます。
また一方で、バラード作品の 「 Love Me Tender 」 にて新機軸を見せたり、 同名映画にてハリウッド・デビューも飾り、音楽と映画の両面で大活躍を始めました。
１９５８年１月、彼はアメリカ陸軍への徴兵を受け、除隊後１９６９年から過密スケジュールでのライブ活動を再開します。
しかしその過密スケジュールが、完全なワーカホリック状態へと彼を陥いらせました。
１９７０年代には、その人気にかつてほどの勢いが失われたように見られていましたが、熱狂的なファンは世界中に存在していました。
１９７７年８月１６日にテネシー州メンフィスの自宅、グレースランドで死去。 死因は処方薬の誤用による心臓発作と公式に発表されました。
前述のように現在でもプレスリーを慕う人々は世界中にいます。彼等にとってエルヴィスは唯一無二の、何物にも代え難い存在なのです。
” Rock'n'Roll ” を世界に知らしめた最大の功労者、アメリカが生んだ２０世紀を代表する大スター、
彼の存在は巨大でありアメリカの象徴と言えるでしょう。
わずか数行で改めてご紹介するのも面映ゆい、彼については描き尽くす事は出来ません。
又皆さまの方がより詳しく御承知かと思います。 余りにも簡単なもので申し訳なさで赤面の至りです。
