コニー・フランシスも又、今更ご紹介する迄も無い ”ポップス・クィーン ” です。
１９３８年１２月１２日ニュー・ジャージー州ニューアーク ( Newark ) 出身のイタリア系のアメリカ人。
本名 Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero ( コンチェッタ・ローサ・マリア＝フランコネロ ) 。
はじめて音楽に接したのは３才の頃で、地元のクラブやイベントに参加。１１才の時にテレビ番組等に出演。
又タレント・スカウト・ショウに出場、見事優勝してプロ・シンガーとしての第一歩を踏み出します。
コニー・フランシスというステージ・ネームもこの時につけられたもののようです。
コニーが１７才の時ＭＧＭとの契約が成立し、念願のレコード・デビューをはたした彼女でしたが、
決して順調な歩みとは云えないもので、発表された曲はことごとくヒットせず、
およそ２年間にわたってコニーは低迷を余儀なくされました。
しかしようやく１９５８年 「 Who's Sorry Now ? ( フーズ・ソリー・ナウ ) 」 が４位まであがる大ヒットとなり、
ここからコニー・フランシスの名前は一躍アメリカ中へ広まりました。
待望久しかったスター・シンガーの仲間入りをはたすと同時に、次々と大ヒットを連発。
その勢いはとどまることを知らず、またたく間に全米ポップ・シーンの女王にのしあがり、
ポール・アンカやプレンダ・リー、ニール・セダカをしのぐ位置を得て、世界へと波及していきます。
１９６０年代の日本で最もポピュラーな外国人女性ポップ歌手といえばコニー・フランシスと云えるでしょう。
日本に於けるコニー・フランシスは、ＳＰ盤の時代からすでにレコードは出ており、
ドーナツ盤時代に入ってからも前述の 「 フーズ・ソリー・ナウ 」 以降、
人気のピークを少し過ぎたと思われる１９６４年までの６年間に、５０枚以上のシングル盤が発売されました。
日本でコニー・フランシスの大ヒットが生まれたのは 「 カラーに口紅 」 、続いて日本語で歌った 「 ボーイ・ハント 」 でした。
この日本語盤の大ヒットがコニー・フランシスの日本での人気を決定的なものにしました。
本国では全くヒットしなかった 「 Someone Else's Boy 」 を日本語で歌った 「 夢のデイト 」 、
全米７２位の 「 Too Many Rules 」 の日本語盤 「 大人になりたい 」 、
そしてアメリカではヒットしなかった 「 かわいいベイビー 」 は大ヒットを記録している。
日本、アメリカ共に大ヒットしたものと云えば 「 カラーに口紅 」 、 「 ボーイ・ハント 」 、 「 バケーション 」 、
「 想い出の冬休み ( I'm Gonna Be Warm This Winter ) 」 、 「 渚のデイト ( Follow The Boys ) 」 などでしょうか。
１９６１年、ドロレス・ハート、イベット・ミミューらと共演した映画 「 ボーイ・ハント 」 の公開にあたって、
映画が公開される国の言葉で、テーマ曲をレコーディングするというアイディアをとり、
新しいファンを獲得して更にその人気に拍車をかけました。
