[ ブラザーズ・フォー ]　　　　　The Brothers Four


１９５８年シアトルのワシントン大学生、マイク・カークランド（Mike Kirkland）、ジョン・ペイン（John Paine）、

ディックス・フォーリー（Dick Foley）、ボブ・フリック（Bob Flick）の４人がフォークグループ　”ブラザース・フォー”を結成しました。

（１９６６年マイク・カークランドの脱退に伴い、マーク・ピアソン　Mark Pearson　が加入。）

キャンパス・コンサート、シアトルのナイト・クラブなどに出演し人気を得ます。

翌１９５９年コロムビア・レコードで初めてのレコーディング契約をなし、１９６０年「グリーンフィールズ」でデビュー。

続いて映画『アラモ』の主題歌「遙かなるアラモ (Green Leaves Of Summer) 」「７つの水仙 (Seven Daffodils) 」と連続ヒット曲が出ます。

その後「ミッチ・ミラー（Sing Along with Mitch）」や「エド・サリバン・ショー（The Ed Sullivan Show）」など主なテレビにも出演する人気でした。

１９６２年４月初めての来日。以来ほとんど毎年のように日本にやって来ました。

それは当時の日本のキャンパス・フォークやカレッジ・ポップスに大きな影響を与えたのです。

彼等の若さと甘いマスク、そして声の甘さと豊かなハーモニー、

清潔感いっぱいのアイビー・ルックのステージ・ファッション・・・。

人気が沸騰するも当たり前の条件が整っていました。

彼等は１９５０年代に萌芽した「フォーク」の流れを、よりメジャーへと推し進め、

キングストン・トリオ、ＰＰ＆Ｍ等と共に、アメリカ伝来のフォーク音楽のブーム化に貢献しました。

その後のジョーン・バエズ (Joan Baez) やボブ・ディラン (Bob Dylan) へと続く時代は、

アメリカンポップス最大の音楽革命の時代でもあったのではないでしょうか。

１９８９年１０月、バージニア・フォーク・フェスティバルでは、３日間で７万人を動員したと云います。

１１月３０周年記念コンサート（シアトル・オペラハウス）は大成功を収めました。

１９９９年４０周年記念の全米ツアーを行いました。

２０００年には日本でも結成４０周年記念公演を行いました。

６０年代フォークソングブームの第一人者として、アメリカでも日本でも多くの支持者を得ました。

彼らの音楽、永遠のポピュラー・スタンダードは今も尚多くの人々の心に生き続け、

聴けば思わず口ずさみたくなる名曲ばかりなのです。
