１９４３・１１・１２ ニューヨーク州クイーンズ ( Queens ) 生まれ。

小さいころから父親からはギター、母親からピアノを習い、兄弟と共に教会の聖歌隊で歌い始めます。

１２歳の頃にはバンドを結成、高校時代にはプロを目指し音楽事務所に売り込みをはかります。

１９６０年ブライアン１６才の時、キャップレコードに認められ、「 Rosemary （ いとしのローズマリー ）」 でデビュー。

残念ながらこれはヒットしませんでしたが、６０年８月 「 ビキニスタイルのお嬢さん 」 の大ヒットで、

全米ヒットチャート１位にランクされ、一躍トップシンガーの仲間入りをしました。

泳ぎに行って当時流行り始めたビキニの水着を着たものの、恥ずかしくてたまらなくてどうしよう！？… という女の子を歌っている曲ですが、

ラテン風なリズムに乗せて、ブライアン・ハイランドは明るく楽しく嫌み無くリズミカルに歌っています。

原題の方は当時としては、かなりヒンシュクものだったと云う事です。

この歌のバックを歌う女性シンガーはトルディ・パッカーと云い、この曲をいっそう引き立たせています。

その後同様の曲調で「 ベイビー・フェイス 」を発表します。これは日本だけでのヒットでアメリカではヒットしませんでした。

からっとしたクリアなサウンドは、「 ビキニ… 」 のイメージをそのまま受け継いでおり、とても新鮮に聞けましたね。

１９６２年には 「 Sealed with a Kiss （ 涙のくちづけ ）」 もヒットしています。

１９６４年以降ブライアン・ハイランドにはこれと云ったヒットがありませんでしたが、

１９６６年 「 Joker Went Wild 」 が全米２０位となり、再度チャートに戻りました。

日本には１９６０年秋頃 「 ビキニスタイルのお嬢さん 」 が入ってきて、

若干下火となっていた洋楽ポップスを再び盛り上げる一助となりました。
